RSE & PSHE
I have enjoyed PSHE lots because we are learning about money and how to manage it and we have also learnt about pressure groups.
Pupil from Pandas Class
Our Intent
Our carefully considered RSE and PSHE curriculum is designed to help children to flourish as they develop understanding of themselves, others and the choices they may make to lead full and healthy lives now and in the future. The curriculum offers pupils the chance to:
- The knowledge, skills and attitudes that they need to navigate the complexities of life in 21st century
- Gain knowledge which will help them to make informed choices around their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships and finances which will support them in becoming confident individuals and active members of society
- Develop their understanding of fundamental British values: democracy, rule of law, respect and tolerance and individual liberty
- Help children to understand how to keep themselves safe in both real and online contexts
Implementation.
We follow a carefully planned progression of skills and knowledge from Reception to Year 6.
The curriculum is carefully structured to support pupils in developing foundational and pre-requisite knowledge so that they are well prepared to access later content. Pupils make connections between prior and new learning and practice the skills, techniques and methods taught with increasing proficiency.
Our RSE and PSHE curriculum has a spiral structure and is planned to:
- Have increasing complexity; so that each time an area of knowledge is revisited it is covered more fully allowing pupils to make connections and at different times as they mature
- Build on prior knowledge so that pupils can build on skills and knowledge that they have already learnt
- Promote pupils understanding of equality and the Equality Act
- Be inclusive, so that all can develop an understanding of how to stay safe and lead full and healthy lives
- Help children to make connections with learning from other areas of the curriculum such as science and computing
The curriculum meets the statutory requirements for RSE. Where the curriculum goes beyond these, it does so in line with the PSHE program of study as recommended by the DfE. Sex education has been included in line with DfE recommendations and is covered in Year 6 of our scheme.
Impact
The most important impact of this curriculum goes beyond the classroom. It is hoped that learning in this area will support the children making safe, healthy choices and enjoying positive interactions now and in the future.
Within school we hope to see pupils:
- With the knowledge, skills and attitudes that they need to navigate the complexities of their day to day lives in 21st century
- Make informed choices around their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships and finances which will support them in becoming confident individuals and active members of society
- Develop their understanding of fundamental British values: democracy, rule of law, respect and tolerance and individual liberty
- Help children to understand how to keep themselves safe in both real and online contexts
Impact will be monitored by teachers and leaders in line with the teaching and learning policy.
