French

I enjoy it when we learn new words in French. We play games like simon says but with directions in French.

Our Intent

Our carefully constructed French curriculum is designed to help children to develop confidence in communicating with others when:

  • Understanding and communicating ideas, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary
  • Providing opportunities to develop language comprehension through listening and reading
  • Encourage pupils in language production through speaking and writing

Implementation.

We follow a carefully planned progression of skills and knowledge within key stage two. Pupils have the opportunity to build on a growing knowledge of grammar and vocabulary and apply this in different contexts.

Our French curriculum has a sequential structure and is designed to support the pupils in meeting the requirements of the national curriculum through:

  • Listening attentively to spoken language and showing understanding by joining in and responding
  • Explore the patterns and sounds of French through songs and rhymes and make links to spellings and the sounds and meanings of words
  • Appreciation of stories, songs, poems and rhymes
  • Reading carefully and showing understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
  • Broadening vocabulary and developing understanding of new words when introduced into familiar written material, including using a dictionary
  • Engaging in conversations, ask and answer questions, express opinions and respond to those of others seeking clarification and help where needed
  • Speaking in sentences using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures
  • Developing accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases
  • Present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences
  • Write phrases from memory and adapt these to create new sentences to express ideas clearly
  • Use familiar vocabulary in phrases and simple writing
  • Describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing

Each KS2 class will be taught six units of French each year.

Impact

The impact of the French curriculum will be evident through pupils:

  • Understanding and communication of ideas, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary
  • Language comprehension when listening and reading
  • Language production when speaking and writing
  • Pupils’ readiness for their future learning

Impact will be monitored by teachers and leaders in line with the teaching and learning policy.
